Course Overview:
This course is designed for those who are new to assessment and are interested in conducting surveys using Survey Monkey. We will examine some of the strengthens and weaknesses of surveys as a methodology for collecting data from our students, learn some tips and tricks for survey design and build a survey using Survey Monkey. Participants need not have any formal training or experience in assessment.
Course Outline:
This no-pressure three-week course entails approximately 3-5 hours of study each week.
First Week -- participants will become familiar with some of the strengths and limitations of surveys as a methodology and will learn some strategies for designing good survey questions.
Second Week -- participants will learn how to use Survey Money as a tool for conducting surveys. They will learn how to set-up an account, how to navigate some of the functionality, how to design questions using the software and how to launch a survey.
Third Week -- participants will design a survey and invite other participants to take the survey and provide feedback on their design.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Know how to design and launch a survey using Survey Monkey.
Have an understanding of some of the strengths and weaknesses of surveys as a methodology.
Have some degree of proficiency in designing good survey questions.
Be familiar on-line surveys an assessment tool.
Have designed and critically reviewed an on-line survey
Instructor Bio: Jennifer Massey PhD(c) is the Coordinator of Assessment, Evaluation & Outreach for the Division of Student Affairs and an adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at Queen's University. Her research interests include Student Development, Community Engagement, Social capital, and Place attachments. Before joining Queen's Jennifer was employed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of St Andrews, and the University of Windsor. She serves on the NASPA IV-East Assessment, Evaluation, and Research Knowledge Community Advisory Group and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice.
Jennifer holds an MA. From the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a BA(hons) from Kings College London. She is in the final stages of completing her PhD at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.
