Week 1: Course Operation/ Review Syllabus (5%)

Take the online ERIC tutorial located at:

http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/tutorials/eric/

Use ERIC to find one article on the subject of What is Technology? or The History of Technology? Post to the online discussion board an abstract and citation for the article you chose. Postings must be submitted four days before the next class session. Students are responsible for reading all abstracts before Week 2.

Week 5: Tensions Between Technology and Student Affairs (8%)

Using publishing software, develop an itinerary and related publicity for a day-long technology orientation for new students at your home institution. You might consider:
· the academic and social needs of an incoming student population
· the basic skills students need for academic work
· campus resources and possible partnerships
· on-going training initiatives facilitated or organized by student affairs

Week 6: Ethical and Legal Issues in Technology (5%)

Find one state Supreme Court, federal District Court, Appellate Court, or US Supreme Court decision that impacts higher education. Post information and discuss its implications for higher education (Web CT).

Week 7: Organizational Structures and Technology (10%)

Develop a rubric in Microsoft Excel for evaluating the organizational climate of a hypothetical Division of Student Affairs and the function of technology therein. A rubric is an instrument for standardizing an individual’s observations of any social, scientific, or behavioral phenomenon. They are often presented in the form of a chart; a number rating is frequently assigned to various elements of the evaluation. For more information on creating organizational and sociological rubrics, consult here. Although this website pertains most particularly to K-12 student evaluations, the methodology of creating the rubric is the same. For an example rubric, see here. The rubric may contain, but is not limited to, the following assessment categories:

1. The extent of hierarchical decision-making and communication
2. The degree of cooperation between sub-organizations
3. The presence of shared goals and vision with regard to technology
4. The degree of collaboration
5. The distribution of expertise and technical competencies
6. The possibility of institutional renewal, incorporating fundamental shifts of mindset and culture with regard to technological innovation

You may choose to operationalize these variables in more focused or specific statements, and evaluate them accordingly.

Week 8: Finance and the Financing of Technology in Higher Education (8%)

Research online the most recent annual budgets (or financial reports) for one public institution and one private institution. Write a summary of the two institutions’ budgetary priorities, paying particular attention to funding for technology-related initiatives. Consider also:
· What do the two budgets have in common?
· Are there any significant differences?
· Do you agree or disagree with any of the institutional values these funding allocations represent?

Week 9: Building Campus Physical Space Promoting Technology (8%)

Write a 3-5 page paper focusing on two universities that are making steps or have made steps to provide physical space for technology. Look into the cost these institutions put into updating their campuses. Also look into the complexities associated with this type effort. Use the internet as a resource to find your institutions and make sure that you document which sites you used.

Week 10: Problems of Technology (8%)

Look in the Chronicle of Higher Education and find two articles that focus on the Problems in Technology. Make a powerpoint presentation that you will submit on the website for everyone to look at. The Presentation should be no less than 8 slides. Focus in on issues and solutions to these problems and steps that are being taken to alleviate them.

Week 11: Partnerships & Distance Learning (8%)

Students will type a one page journal reflection on what it was like to take a class via distance technology. Post your journal entry on the discussion board and reply to a fellow classmate’s journal entry.

Week 14: Presentations, Job Search Projects (30%)

Description of the Assignment:
Students must submit a 3-4 page evaluation which summarizes the material in the presentation. Student presentations should be 10-15 minutes in length and will utilize an instructional technology to facilitate the presentation.

Important Topics to Consider:
At what type of institution would the student be most professionally satisfied? Be as specific as possible, looking at a range of institutional, geographic, and professional characteristics.

How does the institution use and fund technology?

How does the organizational climate promote or impede the use of technology?

What problems have you observed regarding the application and management of technology at the institution?

What can you, as a new professional, contribute to the technological atmosphere of the institution?

How will you go about applying for the job? Will you use web-based databases? How will you network with other professionals at that institution? Describe the application process.
