Course Objectives:
These objectives comprise a continuum of competencies, from practical,
hands-on skill development to an abstract appreciation for the
role of technology in our discipline. These objectives are measurable.
By the end of the course, students will have completed a set of
homework exercises designed to demonstrate not only a defined set
of technological competencies, but also their understanding of
and appreciation for the role of technology in higher education.
By the end of the course, students will be able to conduct an online
job search, including an evaluation of the state of technology
at their targeted institutions. We will:
1. develop introductory competencies in the standard technologies
of the discipline, such as web development and online research.
This objective will be measured through participation in skills
workshops and through the creation of PowerPoint and HTML documents.
2. prepare students for web-based job searches. The final project
of the semester is the development and execution of a hypothetical
job search, including a presentation of the relationship between
technology, academic affairs, and student affairs at the students’ target
institutions.
3. learn to assess the technological climates of the students’ home
institutions as well as other colleges and universities.
4. come to a common understanding of the function and potential
of technology in higher education.
5. analyze and evaluate the problems and issues associated with
technology in an academic setting.
6. identify imminent trends in technology and their application
to student affairs, including the future of distance education
and technology transfer.
