Now, more than ever, our students and staff face a world full of disagreement, mistrust, injustice and violence. Oftentimes, many are left without a voice or sense of recourse. As educators, we have a duty to prepare, challenge and empower our communities in addressing such issues and conversations. The presenters will suggest how we, as student affairs professionals, can best equip our students and staff members with the skills and experiences necessary to address disagreements in a civil and respectful way. Utilizing Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development and Gilligan's Ethics of Care Theory as our foundation, this session seeks to explore the topic of civility in our daily experience, and offers tips and tools to practitioners so that they can lead conversations at their own institutions.

  • Utilizing Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development and Gilligan's Ethics of Care Theory, this session will address the questions of "what is civility" and, specifically, what is "collegiality".
  • This session will offer tips on how to recognize uncivil behaviors presenting on our campuses.
  • Participants will create an action plan for the incorporation of lessons learned into campus trainings, civility conversations, and student programming at their home institutions.
