Inviting and Inspiring Men to Learn: Improving Effectiveness and Outcomes with Male-Identified Students

OVERVIEW:
The proportion of male students enrolling in and graduating from college has been declining for years, particularly among low-income, Latino, and African-American men. Male students are underrepresented in high-impact learning experiences, and over-represented in incidents of alcohol abuse, violence, and other disruptive circumstances. The media often frames these matters in combative and stigmatizing terms, pitting men and women against each other or otherwise sidetracking important questions about social identity and experiences. Also, despite Student Affairs claiming its territory and expertise around student development, masculine gender identity is rarely covered in graduate preparation programs. This knowledge gap is often justified by invoking the privileged males studied during early psychosocial theory, even though that research didn't utilize a gendered lens. This webinar will orient participants to male gender identity issues and discuss capacity building pedagogical and support strategies for successful outcomes for all students. While we will primarily focus on Cisgendered male students, this information can illuminate opportunities to understand and support all students across gender and sexual diversities.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • Learn about gendered lenses for student development work.
  • Orient to the relationship between dominant masculine norms and campus climate issues.
  • Attendees will have a basic understanding of developmental processes and needs of male students.
  • Attendees will identify and challenge their underlying assumptions in practice with male students.
  • Participants will be challenged to refine their views of men and masculinity.
  • Participants will identify several strategies for developing programs, services and individual work with male students and groups.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
  • Graduate Students
  • Graduate Preparation Program Faculty
  • Entry to senior level professionals interested in improving effectiveness with male students.
  • SSAOs tasked or compelled to address male students' engagement, retention and learning.
