OVERVIEW:
Do you find yourself getting frustrated, defensive or dismissive when the topic of racism comes up? Race and privilege are not easy topics to discuss but they are important especially when someone who is experiencing racism opens up to you. From your position of leadership you are able to help the staff and students who come to you for advice, support, advocacy, or just to be heard. It is vital that you listen generously with the goal of understanding. This is one of the communication skills you will learn that build compassion and connection. Through discussions about systemic bias, you will examine systems of privilege and become more aware of your own privilege. During this course you will learn skills for communicating about race and privilege, you will recognize and overcome your barriers to communication about these topics, and become more aware of your own privilege.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
  • Learn communicating skills for discussing race and privilege.
  • Recognize their personal barriers to communication.
  • Learn the principles of effective listening.
