Faculty rank will be determined based on the successful candidate’s experience, expertise, and training. The position begins in August 2024.

The mission of the Department of Sports Medicine, part of the College of Health Sciences, is to prepare students for careers in the athletic training and physician assistant fields. One of the first five NATA approved programs, WCU has offered athletic training education programming since 1970.  The Sports Medicine Department consists of faculty members who serve as instructors in the classroom and/or in the athletic training setting.

The Temporary Faculty member will primarily serve as an athletic trainer. This involves serving as a preceptor and providing athletic training services for WCU intercollegiate athletics. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong attention to the needs of the department’s students.

The appointment is for an academic year. The total workload may be up to 12 credits per semester based on department needs. The appointment does not include teaching responsibilities. There may be the opportunity of contract renewal in the following semester(s).

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide clinical athletic training services within the Sports Medicine program.  Workload will be assigned based on experience and areas of specialization depending on department needs.
  • Serving as liaison to medical personnel and the athletic department
  • Serve as primary athletic trainer to assigned WCU intercollegiate student-athletes
  • Provide excellent patient-centered and evidence-based athletic training care
  • Serve as preceptor for athletic training students in WCU’s CAATE-accredited Master of Science in Athletic Training Program
  • May travel with selected sports
  • Advise and mentor students
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Athletic Training or a closely related field
  • BOC certification; must be attained by August 1, 2024 
  • Pennsylvania athletic training license or eligible for PA license

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of clinical athletics work experience; and/or
  • Athletic training experience with high-risk sports at collegiate level; and/or
  • Experience as a preceptor for athletic training students from an accredited AT program; and/or
  • Professional service with athletic training organizations at the state, district, or national level
