This position reports to the Assistant Vice Provost, Student Support Services, under the Academic Success division. The primary responsibility of this position is to serve as the College's Certifying Veterans Affairs Official, which includes processing all applications for benefits; certify veterans, and veterans' dependents for educational benefits; certify registration, and courses enrolled in towards a degree or program, and assist with student eligibility in accordance with Veterans Administration regulations.

 

Other responsibilities include working as part of the Academic Success teams to create student-centered, academic and co-curricular experiences and provide proactive student support services to aid in retention, academic success, timely degree completion and student satisfaction. This position will also be integral in supporting the division in increasing support of graduate students through new and existing academic services and accessible, developmentally appropriate resources.

Function/Responsibility

 

Veterans Affairs Certifying Official

 

• Oversee, coordinate, and assume responsibility of the daily operations, services, and all activities related to the Veterans Program. Exercise independent judgment to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations related to programs and services offered to veterans, active duty personnel, and veterans' dependents.

• Assume responsibility for state and federal reporting related to Veterans Program services and activities including applications, and responding to internal, state, and federal audits.

• Serve as technical resource to students and staff, and a key member of the Veterans Committee; respond to inquiries related to veterans affairs; provide information in an individual and/or group setting; interpret and explain federal and state regulations and legislation related to veterans' programs.

 

2. Consultation, Outreach, and Campus Engagement

 

• Oversee the federally funded Veterans Administration Work Study student program; recruit, interview, hire, and train student veterans; develop work assignments and schedules.

• Advise the Veterans Student Organization; Oversee the Veterans Center space and web presence; Plan programming for Veterans Day appreciation and other events for students and families with the Veterans Committee.

• Act as a resource and reference for graduate students seeking to connect with student support services, such as tutoring, accommodation, Career Center, or processes carried out by administrative offices (Registrar, Business Office, Financial Aid).

• Manage web presence and resources for prospective and current students, advisors, and staff.

 

3. Other Student Support Services

 

• Serve as a resource for adult learners, including veterans and graduate students, to help students connect with academic resources and departments, or offer academic coaching as appropriate.

• Act as a liaison with graduate and professional programs to create an inclusive and supportive environment for students' academic and personal success.

• Provide an accessible point of contact in-person and online for students in online programs or on-campus during evening/weekend hours.

• Work as part of the Academic Success teams to offer and advise students seamlessly on integrated student support services, remove obstacles to student success through online and in-person support services, and participate in division events and training.

 

4. Professional Development:

 

• Attends Veterans affairs e-webinars and conferences as necessary to adhere to changes in VA policies and procedures.

• Maintain active membership and involvement in regional and national professional organizations related to student support services or new directions in higher education and academic success.

• Continue to learn and develop ways to adopt best practices for student success and working with diverse college students.

 

Requirements

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education: REQUIRED: Bachelor's Degree PREFERRED: Master's Degree

 

Experience: (years required and applicable field of experience): Two+ years of increasingly responsible experience working with veterans and adept knowledge of Veterans Administration benefits and resources available to veterans is preferred

 

Skills/Abilities: (e.g. computer skills, written & verbal skills, trades, laws, procedures, technical) Knowledge and experience working with and applying student disability law in Higher Education preferred. Strong analytical, customer service and dispute management skills required.

 

Licenses & Certifications (e.g. CPA, RN, etc.): REQUIRED: None PREFERRED: VA School Certifying Official Certified is preferred

 

Other Requirements: (e.g. travel, weekend/evening work) Regularly available late afternoons and evenings, and some weekend work to accommodate graduate and veteran student hours.

 

Salary Description $68,000
